Adventures in celebrating a Birthday during Quarantine

We may all agree these are strange times, especially to celebrate anything during a Pandemic. It may be challenging not having your friends and family with you in person to celebrate a day so special as this. BUT. THAT. DOES. NOT. MEAN. IT. CAN’T. BE. SPECIAL!!!!!

I am a huge fanatic of birthday parties, or at least decorating and throwing or even just celebrating my friend’s birthdays at Chili’s. In my shoes, that’s a different story, I know it’s awkward having to sit through everyone singing to you while waiting to eat cake and another year turning older? no thank you. The awkwardness is real. This isn’t about me right now though, it’s about how you can still celebrate with everything going on and how you can do so in an affordable way!

A list of places to look for party decorations & supplies

  • Dollar Tree
  • 99¢ store
  • Walmart
  • Yard Sales
  • Goodwill and other thrift stores
  • Target
  • Hobby Lobby
  • AliExpress

I knew I wanted to create a theme my mom (the birthday gal) would like, something that wasn’t just an average birthday party that someone threw. If you know me, you know my creativity can extend into emotions and I may just go over the top to create the best experiences. Again, I really love birthdays.

My planning started out as an Orange themed party with orange slices and bohemian terra cotta colors. The only problem was that I got so busy I didn’t have enough time to order items from online. I spent my days off shopping back and forth from store to store and frantically searching through Pinterest for more ideas. I had previously seen Citrus weddings and birthday party ideas but did not like the color combinations as much but I was on the right path. Might I say it is extremely hard to find orange fruit items?? I would find lemons, limes, pineapples and watermelon everywhere but no oranges! I mean its almost summer, I would think I could find something. It wasn’t until I did my 3rd visit to dollar tree (I went to three different locations) where I found several orange items that I realized pink would match very well, from there I pieced white and yellow decorations and realized it could all work!

I also paid a visit, for room decoration purposes, to Home Goods where I found two clear plastic cups with oranges and some lemons going around in pattern. It was out of the blue and I could only find those two, the price was $2.99 for each of them but I just knew I had to get them. (I later ended up dropping one while decorating the night before my mom’s birthday and it chipped from the bottom, I still cry about it at night)

Some other things I found were lemon slice napkins at Dollar Tree, where I also ended up getting my pale colored orange plates. Along my search online I found out Party City had

Again, this was a small celebration/ birthday decoration thing for those living in my household but a fun idea you could do is grab your laptop and zoom call your friends and family to wish the one who is being celebrated a happy day.

P.S. if you were wondering, I made the cake naturally flavored, butter pecan cake and orange buttercream icing!
